Here are some suggestions:

An Archery Tournament (including horseback riding, shooting while in combat, target shooting, distance shooting, trick shots)

A Suian (sp?) style fighting tournament

Maybe a great hunt. I think there is one in Yellowia

DMDerek and I also discussed a contest to be head of thieves guild. Using all the skills that a rogue would use.

Kingdom, Lord, or Merchant is sponsoring a tourney to hire the winner to lead a "Special Force" (ie. elite guardsmen, Secret Police, or Black Ops type unit (you know kind of like the Guardians.....but competent)). The winer can then hand pick the members of the Special Force.

How about a tinkering tournament. Where all the tinkers make robots and then have them battle it out in an arena. Just like in Robot Wars.

Not sure what a great hunt is but anything with hunting has to be good. I like the sounds of Valdis' post also. I think that there should be some uncertainty in what we will be doing. Maybe different fighting styles or weapons and we will not know what that will be until it is time to fight. That might level the playing field a little if no one knows exactly what the tourney will entail.

so far, all ideas sound excellent. i humbly submit the following suggestions: 1) an epic level chronomancer tournament, sponsored by the gods, where the winner gets to travel back in time and permanently alter one event in habololian history as he or she sees fit. all combatants start at 21st level and this could lead to the winner's path to godhood. it would also be a kick in the pants to the god of lost knowledge. 2) good old fashioned wizard tournament with combatants from all schools of discipline. spells would be modified in some way to deal sub dual damage and/or not cause permanent alterations. the winner would be named the new arch mage/headmaster of a newly constructed school of wizardry. location, affiliations, schools of discipline taught, etc. to be determined by the dm. 3) fight club style underground wizard battle where all combatants are vying for a powerful piece of arcane knowledge (maybe an artifact, an ancient tome, or even something more far fetched like an extra-terrestrial spell component or something). this knowledge is capable of unhinging ones mind in order to discover a new style of magic. this would be a good way to introduce new material from all the current supplements or to resurrect dead gods or something. i know it's ridiculous, but i'm throwing it out there anyway. that's what two years of gaming withdraw does to a man... 4) a bardic tournament. all combatants would plow through the tournament as usual, using all their skills to survive, then the two players left at the end would be required to perform their own original song, poem, etc. to win. this battle of wits would be judged by a panel of bardic professors (all of us unless the dm prefers to control the show) to determine who takes the prize. players will be required to write their showdown piece in advance and keep it to themselves until the final battle. that way, nobody has the advantage.

Not only write their own song, but play them on "Guitar Hero World Tour" (Bonus points for playing it on Expert)

Bardic....write own song....awesome.

On a serious note, the Chronomancer tournament would be too limiting in that to be a chronomancer, you are required to have so many things that the characters would be too similar.

The problem with the tinkering tournament is that the rules just aren't there. We would be making up so much I don't know how much skill in character creation it would be. This is a cool idea for after I have a lot of tinkering rules finished.

I have narrowed it down to three and will make a decision by March so everyone has three months to prepare.

Windblade's co-worker has decided to join in the tournament, so that's another player for the event.

Just a thought but if we do have something outside of the main gaming group, I think it would be better if the characters battle against each other rather then say an archery tournament. I think the players who are not as involved in the story line as much would probably enjoy that better.

Agreed, anything we do will involve mostly or entirely player vs player combat / competition.

I have narrowed the window of days down to the following, all in June:

13th, 20th, 21st, 27th, 28th

Valdis, I believe your birthday is on the 21st, and Windblade's wife's birthday is around there as well.

The 13th is also the same day as poker. Opinions for those of you who play that as well whether the monster D&D/poker full day is a good or bad idea.
