Do you think we are missing out...

I was going to put this under "Playing a Campaign in Habololy" but DMDerek had started another thread there and he asked me to put this in a different spot. He said he would move it later when his thread runs its course.

I would say a few times over the last year or two I have discussed this topic with DMDerek. However, I think it would be great for a thread to see what others think.

The idea that we were discussing was the concept of fleeing from combat and encounters in which we might be overmatched. I feel this is missing from our campaign. In every encounter we usually have a reasonable chance of winning and we are pretty evenly matched with our opponents. Which is a great compliment to our DM. However, I feel that by the way we play the game that we do not give the DM the option to give us an unblanced encounter where we have little or no chance of winning. I think this is sad because I think we miss out on the thrill of fleeing from a great evil that we must defeat at a later time. Right now I think we are in a vicious cycle where we reinforce each other ideas. We do not expect to DMderek to have an enounter that we must flee therefore we never plan to flee. DMDerek doesn't expect us to ever flee so he never has an encounter ready that we don't have a possibility to beat. I would love to break this cycle because I think we are missing out on part of a game that adds another component of excitement. Just like Frodo has to flee from the riders. He must use all his skills not be found. Another example is Luke Skywalker. There are many times that Luke and the crew must flee from Vader and the Empire because they are overmatched. However, eventually Luke becomes a Jedi Knight and he is able to go and face the Empire and along with his companions defeat them. I think it would be cool to meet our enemy in the beginning and realize their power and then it would only be more thrilling when we defeat that enemy later on in the campaign. Anyway I just wanted to see what you all thought about this concept and if you think you would like to see a little more "fleeing" be a part of our game (of course not too much because they idea can be over done but just some to get a different type of excitement from the story). Also let us know you think it is missing and if you don't think it is missing please give an example of when you saw it in a campaign.

Examples of where i saw an example if this in a campaign:

The Escape from the Orphanage in Lynkeed
Any encounter with The Hunter Of Paladins
Sexy Treasure encounter #1
Sexy Treasure encounter #2
Assault on Palumbton #1
Any encounter with "The Collector"

There may be more, but these are the ones i can think of off of the top of my head. I do agree however that there is a major disparity between the encounters we need to flee and those we fight. But this may have more to do with the story and our decisions than anything else.

Example: In Icefia, If Tolan, Asinjin, and the others had been discovered by the Red headed cleric and his Baalor buddies early on. There is no question that we would have had to flee with all possible speed. Probably far enough that Asinjin would not complain about the weather.

It may be that, and i of course don't know if this is true, both DMDerek and DMDrew plan situations that, if we are especially inept, or make apocolyptic mistakes, will bring us to an encounter we can not hope to win at the time (like walking in on Alar during a meeting with all of his minions, Habollian and otherwise, and a few of his summoned deamons). It may be that between all of us, we curb the fatalistic impulses of others.

Agreed with Jay, I think we've done this many times. Escape from Lynkeed was actually twice (once from the vishtoo and once from the orcish armus). Malek, Koth & Co. from the Bane (early on). Vega, Monteron and Windblade from the Three Ways Home when we snuck onboard. I'm sure there's more. Overall, I guess we are evenly matched more often than not, but playing a losing season would lose it's novelty pretty quickly. I think it's been a good mix.

On the other hand, I can think of several encounters were we should of fled but didn't, which obviously didn't turn out well for us. Huh, now that I think about it, all of them have been DMDrew run games...

I agree that I have included more encounters that are intended as tests of your common sense and resourcefulness vs. combat ability in my last few campaigns than DM Derek has, and with one glarimg exception, you have recognized them for what they are.

This season the decision to fight or flee was largely taken out of our hands, because we were not running the show, but on the whole I think there is a good method to DM Derek's approach to encounters.

I also think DMDerek is very good at his approach to encounters. I think he models everything very well based on what he wants from the story and our needs as players. However, when I talked to him we both thought there was something lacking in this area but we just can't put our finger on it.
