(Blink Blink) Thats the closest any human has ever come to sounding like a gnome I've ever heard. Lets go down to Claude's.

Once there: I am thrilled that you are interested in disc crossbows, I've always thought they are far superior to the bolt throwing type. The range is pretty good, the shot to shot speed and accuracy is a nice compromise between traditional light and heavy crossbows and frankly it scares the life out of people who are looking down the barrel. Its also quieter than the bolt throwing type.

All of your observations are right on. A large scale version would be a superior anti-personell weapon to a traditional ballista, and would be far more effective against rigging and sails. (Gnax says all of this while seemingly unconsciously dissassembling his crossbow). The problem as you guessed is wind resistance. The disc flutters and to combat that problem there are three requirements: The tolerances of the crossbow are far higher than an ordinary crossbow, considerably more training is required to keep it steady, and the discs must be precisely weighted. I have seen larger, so called siege models, and as the power increases some of the problems lessen, but a model any bigger than this and the problem become the weight of the ammo, as the discs weigh a lot more than bolts and you have the magazines. Neither of those are problems for ship mounted weapons. Lets take a crack at it!!

"I don't know. I wasn't part of the crew then." he tells you from his hammock where he is recovering from scrag inflicted wounds.
Ok, same question to Camashi, and failing that, then to the Capt.

Camasi says, "I was not part of the crew either."

Amare says, "The ship has many enemies, among them, every pirate. I was not part of the crew either, so I can't say what exactly happened to them other than to Captain Evanni. She was set adrift aboard the Vigilant Seas after it was gutted by the Sexy Treasure."

Raketomi, when he is able, walks among the other wounded crewmembers to talk and joke with them to help keep morale up. He recounts his part in the "battle", adding some humorous, if ficticoius, incidents that get embellished with each telling of the story. A favorite saying of his soon becomes "It's much easier, not to mention safer, to stab something in the back than to face it head on. I'll have to remember that for next time"

Valdis, chalking up his quick recovery to the clerics on the ship and a quirk of his mixed heritage, helps pick up the slack on the ship left by the wounded men.

I still need two percentile rolls.

When Valdis walks around, he appears to carry a higher level of respect. The story of his heroics against the trolls has be circulating.

Not including PCs, there are now:

14 able seamen

3 midshipmen

29 seamen

7 master mariners

All other positions remain the same as when you started.

The GPS (Gnomish Positioning System)

The following is what is told to you by the captain, Daniel the midshipman and Gneckelerback the Annon Master.

Before the war of technology, the tinkers designed a system of navigation they considered superior to anything that had existed. It did not rely on maps or directions. It involved coordinates around the world.

Gneck begins to talk briefly about a globe and spherical geometry. He loses everyone.

The GPS allowed the Tinkocracy to take their Flying Deliverers of Death to every target with amazing accuracy. It allowed them to travel the seas without having been there before.

When the Tinkocracy fell, an effort was made to destroy the GPS. They were almost entirely successful on land, but at sea many of the devices that deciphered the GPS still exist. These devices are spheres about eight inches in diameter. The Vigilant Seas actually possesses one. It is one of the only items that was left on the ship when the Sexy Treasure gutted the ship.

The GPS is considered bad luck now, much like a map. Those who use it often disappear.

The captain gives the device to Nathan, along with coordinates. "Can you figure out how to get to use this?"

You can ask questions about it first to determine that.

Any other features besides being a sphere? Are there any numbers, letters or other symbols on it? How heavy is it? What is it made of? I detect magic on it.

It is made of thick glass, which clouds about an inch into it.

There are thousands of numbers on the outside, all too small to read with the naked eye. (Spot check DC 30)

It weighs between 5 and 10 pounds.

It is not magical.
