(Blink Blink) Thats the closest any human has ever come to sounding like a gnome I've ever heard. Lets go down to Claude's.
Once there: I am thrilled that you are interested in disc crossbows, I've always thought they are far superior to the bolt throwing type. The range is pretty good, the shot to shot speed and accuracy is a nice compromise between traditional light and heavy crossbows and frankly it scares the life out of people who are looking down the barrel. Its also quieter than the bolt throwing type.
All of your observations are right on. A large scale version would be a superior anti-personell weapon to a traditional ballista, and would be far more effective against rigging and sails. (Gnax says all of this while seemingly unconsciously dissassembling his crossbow). The problem as you guessed is wind resistance. The disc flutters and to combat that problem there are three requirements: The tolerances of the crossbow are far higher than an ordinary crossbow, considerably more training is required to keep it steady, and the discs must be precisely weighted. I have seen larger, so called siege models, and as the power increases some of the problems lessen, but a model any bigger than this and the problem become the weight of the ammo, as the discs weigh a lot more than bolts and you have the magazines. Neither of those are problems for ship mounted weapons. Lets take a crack at it!!
